Human Responsibility in AI-Mediated Work
Xufen Tu · Independent Interdisciplinary Researcher Public Citation Version: v1.0
AI can change the visible shape of a job. Work that once occupied much of a person’s day may become faster, while less visible questions remain: Is the output suitable for this customer? Has an important condition been misunderstood? Who will answer when an error affects someone?
My research observation is that saving time on an activity does not necessarily remove the human responsibility attached to its result. A person may receive a polished output sooner yet have less context for judging it. An organization may produce more material while the people affected by it still need someone who can listen, explain and take responsibility.
This matters in work involving customers, colleagues and the public. People do not experience an outcome only as information delivered. They experience whether their circumstances were understood, whether a promise was kept and whether someone remains available when a result is wrong.
My current position is that human judgment and accountability remain part of the work even when AI contributes substantially to it. Their value cannot be inferred solely from the amount of time spent producing an output.
This article does not predict how many jobs AI will create or remove. It does not define new occupations, promise employment outcomes or prescribe how an organization should divide work. The effects of AI differ across settings and require observation over time.
The human responsibility boundary is most visible when another person must live with the result. Assistance can change who performs an activity; it does not automatically settle who is answerable for its consequences.
