Provenance Evidence Does Not Replace Human Judgment
Xufen Tu · Independent Interdisciplinary Researcher Public Citation Version: v1.0
Knowing where a piece of content came from is valuable. It can help a reader distinguish one version from another and understand what a source claims about its origin. Yet a reliable account of origin does not tell the reader whether the content is accurate, fair or appropriate to use.
This distinction has become more visible as digital content travels between people and platforms. A record associated with a photograph, document or article can answer some questions about its history. The harder questions may concern what it depicts, what has been left out, whether a claim is supported and what consequences follow from relying on it.
My observation is that evidence of provenance is sometimes treated as if it settled the meaning or trustworthiness of the underlying content. Those are different judgments. A genuine source can make an unsupported claim. A traceable document can be misunderstood. A correctly identified version can still be unsuitable for a consequential decision.
My current research position is that provenance strengthens the conditions for human judgment without replacing it. It gives people information they may need to ask better questions and assign responsibility more clearly. The final interpretation and use of the content remain matters for accountable people and institutions.
This position does not diminish the value of provenance standards or claim that they should determine what people believe. It makes a narrower point: origin evidence answers questions about a record’s history; it cannot, on its own, decide truth, meaning or responsibility.
