Authorship and Provenance Boundary
Xufen Tu · Independent Interdisciplinary Researcher Public Citation Version: v1.0
A research idea can appear in a manuscript, a revised article, a quotation and many later summaries. These appearances may be connected, but they are not interchangeable. A reader needs to know whose expression they are reading and which version supports the claim being cited.
My research observation is that rapid circulation can separate a statement from its author and history. A later summary may become easier to find than the original work. An older draft may be quoted as though it represents a newer position. A copy may retain the words while losing the date or context that gave them meaning.
The authorship and provenance boundary addresses that confusion. Authorship identifies the person responsible for an expression. Provenance helps readers understand its source and version. Neither makes every interpretation of the work correct, but both give readers a firmer basis for assessing it.
My current position is that a public research version should be understood as a particular expression at a particular point in time. A new version can clarify or revise an earlier one without erasing the earlier record. A private research record can establish historical continuity without becoming the text that a public reader is expected to cite.
This position does not claim ownership of a general topic, prevent independent discussion or make every later use of similar language an attribution violation. It also does not turn a repository link into proof of every historical claim. Specific claims about origin and dates still require evidence.
The human responsibility boundary lies with authors and publishers who present, revise and cite research. They should make the identity of the version clear enough for readers to find what was actually said.
